The restaurant industry has experienced no shortage of closures within the last year, but a handful of shutdowns stood out because of the brands’ long histories and devoted customer followings. From national chains to regional icons, these closures left many diners stunned.
Smokey Bones disappears from the restaurant landscape
One of the year’s biggest surprises came when parent company Twin Hospitality announced plans to phase out Smokey Bones and convert many of its locations into Twin Peaks restaurants.
Founded in 1999, Smokey Bones built a loyal customer base around barbecue, burgers, and a sports-bar atmosphere. The chain operated dozens of locations across the United States and had survived years of challenges in the casual dining sector. Few customers expected the nearly 30-year-old brand to disappear so quickly.
The move effectively ends one of the country’s most recognizable barbecue restaurant chains.
Royal Castle’s final location closes
South Florida also lost a piece of its culinary history when the last remaining Royal Castle restaurant closed in Miami late last year.
Founded in 1938, Royal Castle grew into a regional powerhouse with more than 140 locations at its peak. The chain became famous for its small square burgers and late-night dining culture long before national fast-food giants dominated the market.
While most locations disappeared decades ago, one final restaurant kept the brand alive. Its closure ended an 87-year legacy and marked the end of one of Florida’s oldest restaurant chains.
Bahama Breeze’s future comes to an end
Another shock arrived when Darden Restaurants decided to eliminate Bahama Breeze, the Caribbean-inspired chain that debuted in 1996 in Florida.
The company announced that its remaining locations would either close permanently or be converted into other Darden concepts. The decision surprised many diners who viewed Bahama Breeze as a unique offering in the casual dining industry.
Known for tropical cocktails, island-inspired dishes, and vacation-like décor, the chain had operated for nearly three decades. Its disappearance highlights the difficult environment facing restaurant operators and serves as a reminder that even well-known brands are not guaranteed a future.
