A longtime Michigan restaurant known for burgers, hot dogs, and old-school diner charm is preparing to close after more than six decades serving the community. Daly Restaurant announced that it plans to shut down at the end of summer 2026, bringing an end to one of metro Detroit’s last classic drive-in style restaurants.
A local institution dating back to the 1940s
The restaurant’s roots stretch back to 1948, when it first opened as Bill’s Drive In before eventually becoming Daly Drive In and later simply Daly Restaurant. Over the decades, the diner became known for signature menu items including Daly burgers, chili dogs, onion rings, and milkshakes.
At one point, the Daly brand reportedly operated nearly 20 locations throughout metro Detroit. Today, the Livonia restaurant is the last remaining location still in operation.
Following the closure announcement, many longtime customers shared emotional memories online, describing family traditions that spanned generations. Some said they had been visiting the restaurant since childhood and considered it part of Livonia’s identity.
Owner cites rising costs and retirement
Owner Scott Grace, who has operated the restaurant for nearly 50 years, said health concerns and retirement plans contributed to the decision to close. According to local reports, Grace had attempted multiple times since 2020 to sell the business to someone willing to continue operating the restaurant, but no deal materialized.
He also noted that rising operating expenses and major building repairs had become increasingly difficult to manage. Reports indicate the property has been sold to 7-Eleven, which plans to redevelop the site after the restaurant closes.
Another longtime diner disappears
Daly Restaurant joins a growing list of historic diners and independent restaurants that have recently closed across the country. For many customers, however, the closure represents more than the loss of a restaurant — it marks the end of a familiar community gathering place that lasted nearly seven decades.
