After more than six decades as a beloved community fixture, the Monterey House Mexican Restaurant in Beaumont, Texas, has served its final meals. The iconic Tex-Mex eatery, which has been open since 1963, closed permanently on December 31, 2025, marking the end of a 62-year culinary legacy that introduced generations of Southeast Texans to classic Tex-Mex flavors.
Rooted in community history
Founded by Bob and Pris LeJeune as a modest taco stand with just four tables, Monterey House grew into a cherished local staple known as much for its warm, family-run atmosphere as for its hearty menu. Over the decades, the restaurant became synonymous with favorites like queso, taco salad, and Mexican pizza, drawing patrons from across the Golden Triangle who returned year after year.
Regarding running the restaurant together for so many years, Pris LeJeune says, “A lot of people asked, ‘How did you stay married? And some days it was tough…as the years went by we kept making it and more people came in. We made a lot of good friends and fine people that have been true to us.”
“Time to call it.”
The decision to close came after health challenges for Bob LeJeune, now 89, who suffered a stroke earlier in 2025. Bob’s grandson said after the stroke, it was “time for them to call it” regarding his grandparents’ retirement.
With both founders advancing in age (Bob’s wife, Pris, is 84), the family determined it was time to retire and pass the chapter of their long-running business to history. Their announcement on social media drew an outpouring of support from loyal customers and former staff.
On one of the last days the Monterey House was open, one customer said, “Went today and couldn’t even get in [the] parking lot!! Packed with a long line waiting outside!!” Another loyal customer recounts going to eat there since the 80s, saying, “I wish the family nothing but the best in retirement and thank you for the many years of great memories.”
Another beloved local spot gone
Though Monterey House’s closure was related to the age of the owners, its closure underscores broader challenges faced by independent restaurants nationwide, where rising costs and changing dining patterns have made longevity increasingly rare. While Monterey House may be closed for good, the memories it helped provide will live on.
