A piece of Utah history that seemed lost forever may soon make a comeback.
The Idle Isle Café, located in downtown Brigham City, was long considered Utah’s oldest continually operating restaurant — a Main Street staple that had been serving locals and travelers since 1921.
There were a few ownership changes over the years, but for more than a century, the cozy café dished up comfort classics – think country fried steak, hot turkey sandwiches, liver and onions, bison burgers, homemade rolls – in a setting that felt untouched by time.
But in May 2025, the restaurant abruptly closed its doors, with claims that the owners planned to sell the building.
When the café’s doors finally shut, it marked the end of 104 years of continuous operation under the same name — a streak few restaurants in the country could match.
Now, there’s fresh hope that the Idle Isle could return.

According to Chew & Chat in late September, the owners did finally sell the restaurant, including the restaurant’s name and recipes. That’s in a bit of a twist to initial reports back in May that the owners had been considering taking the name and opening new Idle Isle Café locations.
The new owner is a mystery, so it’s unclear what the future plans are for the space and the Idle Isle Café name.
In any case, the 104-year streak of continuous operation is over.
That streak started back in 1921 when the Idle Isle Café was originally opened by P.C. and Verabel Knudson and became a community hub during the Great Depression and World War II. Generations of families continued to gather in its wood-paneled booths for Sunday dinners and slices of homemade pie. Even as chain restaurants popped up nearby, Idle Isle remained defiantly old-school — offering the same recipes and service style that had made it a local institution.
If the revival effort succeeds, it would mark a rare second act for a Utah restaurant that has weathered more than a century of change.
