Intro

As we celebrate America’s Independence Day, it’s time for some serious food to go along with the fireworks.
We’re counting down the 10 foods you’d be really, really disappointed in not seeing at a 4th of July cookout.
Let’s get to the list…

#10 A Mayonnaise-Based “Salad”

In my personal list, macaroni salad edges out potato salad for our 10th spot.
But that may be a controversial take, so let’s celebrate all the mayo-forward salads together!
You, too, egg salad…

#9 Crabs

A crab feast isn’t for everyone, but it’s summer-y and loads of fun!
So here’s our hat tip to places like Maryland where the crab feast is a classic.
Not buying it? Okay, try the next one…

#8 Flag Cake

You could substitute your favorite patriotic Instagram recipe here, but you can’t go wrong with an American flag cake.
Whether decorated with frosting or fresh fruit, this one will be a hit!

#7 BBQ

Depending on where you grew up, barbecue may mean simply grilling out, but we’re talking about low and slow smoking here.
Think ribs, chicken, brisket, etc.
Like with crabs, you may have a few disappointed grilling enthusiasts, but if your rubs are in order, there won’t be much fuss!

#6 Apple Pie

In my opinion cherry and pecan are superior pies, but what’s more American than apple pie?
And if a scoop of vanilla ice cream were to appear alongside it, I won’t complain!

#5 Chips

In my mind, it’s Ruffles with some French onion dip.
But Doritos, Fritos, Cheetos, or your potato chip of choice are worthy alternatives!

#4 Corn on the cob

No matter what your choice of main course, a side of corn on the cob is perfect.
Knee high by the Fourth of July!

#3 Hamburgers

However you prepare them (I like chopping up onions into the meat), burgers belong here.
In fact, maybe it’s too low on the list given how crowd-pleasing they are.
Especially if it’s a homemade mix vs. frozen store-bought patties.

#2 Watermelon

Watermelon is THE fruit of the summer and the prince(ss) of picnics!
It’s not often you get to buy an entire watermelon, slice it up, and have enough people to take it down.
So don’t waste your chance!

#1 Hot dogs

Snobs may prefer “specialty sausages” like brats, Italian sausage, or Polish.
And they’re darn good…don’t get me wrong. I will NOT be angry if someone gives me an Italian with peppers and onions!
But whether it’s ease of preparation, low cost, variety of toppings, or bite-size deliciousness, a hot dog makes a strong case.
If none of that sways you, it’s a hot dog eating contest every 4th that gets us salivating.
Don’t leave yet, though…we have a bonus drink…

Bonus Drink: Lemonade

It’s got to be lemonade, right?
Whether you drink it “adult” style, frozen, or just “regular,” fresh-squeezed lemonade is super-refreshing!
Did we nail the drink and the top 10 foods or did we miss something?
