55-year-old restaurant chain shuts down nearly all locations nationwide

A longtime American restaurant chain has closed dozens of locations in a major shift for the brand. After more than five decades in business, the company has now shut down its remaining corporate-owned restaurants across the country.

O’Charley’s closes remaining corporate locations

O’Charley’s abruptly closed all of its remaining corporate-operated restaurants on September 8th, according to recent reports. The Nashville-based chain had 49 company-owned locations remaining before the closures, significantly fewer than the nearly 250 restaurants it operated at its peak.

Founded in 1971, O’Charley’s built its reputation around Southern-inspired American food, including steaks, chicken, seafood, burgers, and its popular rolls and pies. The chain became a familiar presence throughout the Southeast and Midwest.

The September closures represent a major contraction for the 55-year-old restaurant brand.

Chain had already been shrinking

O’Charley’s has been steadily reducing its footprint in recent years. The company closed numerous restaurants as it worked to streamline its operations and improve its financial position.

The chain’s parent company, Cannae Holdings, had also been reviewing its restaurant portfolio. O’Charley’s had fallen from its peak of nearly 250 locations to fewer than 50 corporate restaurants by 2026.

The closures come as casual-dining restaurants continue to face changing consumer habits, higher operating costs, and competition from fast-casual and quick-service concepts.

Very few O’Charley’s restaurants remain

The latest closures do not necessarily mean O’Charley’s has disappeared entirely.

A small handful of  restaurants operated by franchisees are reportedly still open, with some reports listing only three franchised O’Charley’s locations remaining in the US. The future of those remaining franchise locations remains uncertain.

For longtime customers, however, the shutdown marks a significant turning point for a restaurant brand that has been part of the American dining landscape since the early 1970s.
