Intro

Costco, everyone’s favorite warehouse, is growing rapidly.
From a base of almost 900 stores, it’s adding several more before the end of the year.

Costco’s general strategy

Without getting too far into details, I’ve observed that Costco’s strategy is pretty straightforward:
– Establish a “beachhead” in a large, wealthy population center – think Toronto, Boston, LA
– Expand out into the suburbs
– Prioritize being “easy to get to” – near main arteries and high-traffic areas with lots of frontage
– Rinse and repeat
Ok, on to the list!

#1: Bend, Oregon

Bend is a lovely place – I have a cousin who lived there until recently, and there’s a ton of fantastic hiking around there.
Also – Bend has grown like a weed, more than quadrupling in size since 1990 to its current population of 104,557. (And a full 250,000+ in the metropolitan area.)
Bend’s Costco (which opened late last month) is actually a relocation from an earlier Costco on Bend’s east side which had previously opened in 1993.
Congratulations, Bend, on your new Costco!

#2: Napa, California

Napa is obviously incredibly well known as California wine country.
And previous to October 18th, it didn’t have a Costco.
Which, when you think about the demographics, is pretty wild – Napa is wealthy and well-populated, exactly the kind of place you’d think Costco would open a warehouse.
Well, that’s done now!

#3: Brantford, Ontario

Everyone thinks of Costco as a US chain – and of course, it is.
But it also has over 100 locations in Canada, and on November 8th, it opened yet another in Brantford!
For those unaware, Brantford is an outlying suburb of Toronto, and previously residents had to drive to neighboring Hamilton to access the nearest Costco.

#4: Madison, Alabama

Madison’s first Costco opens on November 15th – which will be a huge deal for this town of 60,000.
Until then, residents will have to drive all the way into downtown Huntsville to get Costco’s amazing deals.

#5: Ogori, Fukuoka, Japan

Costco isn’t just in the US and Canada – there are also 35 Costcos in Japan!
Add one more on November 21st – the third in the Fukuoka prefecture.
Also, fun fact – there are 14 Costcos in Taiwan and even one in Iceland.
Truly an amazing, ubiquitous brand.

#6: Pleasanton, California

Pleasanton (what a name) is an outlying suburb of San Francisco and Oakland.
And on November 27th, residents will no longer have to drive out of town to get to Costco!

#7: Torreon, Mexico

Costco’s third largest market (after the US and Canada) is Mexico, where it has 40 warehouses.
And another one is set to open this month in Torreon in Northern Mexico.

So there you have it – these seven lucky cities are getting their very own (or upgraded, in the case of Bend) Costco this Fall.
