Arguably President Trump’s most high-profile appointment was Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Since the FDA falls under Health and Human Services, RFK, Jr. has been using the agency to compel major food and drink companies to voluntarily move away from petroleum-based artificial dyes by the end of 2027.
It’s been very effective so far with companies including Kraft Heinz, PepsiCo, General Mills, and Nestle announcing timelines for eliminating remaining synthetic dyes in their popular products.
And very recently we can add another one…

Most of us don’t think of Walmart as a major food company, but because so many people go to Walmart, its private label brands are HUGE!
For example, Great Value is actually the largest CPG (consumer packaged good) brand in the United States. Per NielsenIQ, 90% of U.S. households have it.
So Walmart’s recent announcement that it will be removing “banned” artificial dyes from its private label foods by January 2027 goes a long way to forwarding RFK, Jr and the FDA’s goals.
In addition to the artificial colors, Walmart will be taking out 30 more ingredients including artificial sweeteners, fat substitutes, and preservatives.
Walmart notes that it’s been working on natural dyes as replacements for artificial dyes for years but is pulling the trigger now due to customer tastes changing.
Many foods have successfully made the shift from artificial to natural colorings already (e.g. Kraft Macaroni & Cheese).
Here’s what you can expect from Walmart’s foods and any other brands that make the shift from artificial to natural colorings.
Some foods will look almost exactly the same, but admittedly some will look less vibrant. Think of some of your favorites that look “unnatural”…well, it’s because the colors ARE! And for some foods, you may even see an absence of attempts to add additional color or mimic the “old look.”
Whether you call it caving to Trump and RFK, Jr or just following what customers are wanting, Walmart’s foods are going to be a lot different in coming years.
