A beloved Connecticut restaurant that stood as a local dining institution for a century has closed its doors permanently, marking the end of a landmark era on the state’s shoreline. What once started as a hot dog stand in 1925 became an iconic shoreline staple, and its longtime customers and community are sad to see it go.
Jimmies of Savin Rock shutters after a century
Jimmies of Savin Rock, a popular seafood restaurant and shoreline favorite in West Haven, announced it would close for good on December 7, 2025, after serving customers for more than 100 years. The closure marks the end of a long-running business that began in 1925 as a humble hot dog stand called Moxie before evolving into a full-service restaurant known for seafood baskets, split hot dogs, and classic shore-side fare.
A century of memories and community
Owners shared a heartfelt message of gratitude with the community, thanking patrons for their support over the decades and inviting them to enjoy one last meal before the final day. Longtime diners traveled to the restaurant’s Rock Street location one last time, sharing stories of family traditions, summer nights at Savin Rock, and meals passed down through generations.
Local officials also recognized Jimmies’ significance as a cultural and economic fixture in West Haven. Mayor Dorinda Borer praised the 100-year legacy and the contributions of the Gagliardi family, who operated the business for five generations.
Reflecting broader trends
While the owners didn’t cite specific reasons for closing, there’s been a nationwide pattern of historic and independent restaurants shutting down after decades of service amid rising costs, changing dining habits, and succession challenges. While some classic eateries find ways to adapt or reopen under new ownership, many — like Jimmies — may choose to retire rather than continue in a rapidly evolving industry.
The end of Jimmies marks more than just a business closure — it signifies the fading of a century-old chapter in Connecticut’s culinary and community history.
