Amazon has announced it will close all of its Amazon Fresh grocery stores in Pennsylvania, along with every other physical Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go location nationwide, as part of a strategic shift toward grocery delivery services and expansion of its Whole Foods Market brand.
What’s happening and when
The closures include all six Amazon Fresh locations across the Philadelphia area, with the last day of operation set for Sunday, February 1, 2026. Affected stores are in Bensalem, Broomall, Middletown/Oxford Valley, Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties, Warrington, and Willow Grove.
In fact, Amazon is closing all of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations nationwide and will focus on transforming those locations to Whole Foods markets.
Amazon Fresh
Amazon Fresh is Amazon’s grocery store chain that launched in 2007 as an online grocery delivery service and later expanded into physical stores starting in 2020. The stores feature a mix of fresh produce, meat, dairy, pantry staples, and prepared meals, often incorporating technology like cashier-less checkouts and the Amazon app for seamless shopping.
Amazon Fresh aimed to combine convenience, speed, and a tech-forward shopping experience to compete with traditional supermarkets.
Why Amazon is closing the stores
The company’s decision reflects a broader reevaluation of its grocery business. Amazon plans to double down on online grocery delivery, including fast same‑day services in some markets, and to expand Whole Foods Market with more than 100 new stores in the coming years. (Amazon purchased Whole Foods in 2017.)
Some of the closing Amazon Fresh and Go locations may be converted into Whole Foods Market stores or into smaller‑format concepts like Whole Foods Market Daily Shops, though Amazon has not yet specified which sites will be repurposed.
Impact on customers and employees
While the physical stores are shutting their doors, Amazon Fresh will continue as an online brand offering grocery delivery where available. The company has indicated that employees affected by the closures will be offered new roles in other divisions or a severance option.
For Pennsylvania shoppers, this marks the end of an experiment in Amazon‑branded brick‑and‑mortar grocery retail — with the legacy now shifting toward digital orders and the expanding footprint of Whole Foods.
