A popular restaurant chain known for its health-conscious menu is closing locations as it attempts to overcome financial challenges. The company has filed for bankruptcy protection, leaving questions about its long-term future as it seeks a buyer to help keep the business going.
True Food Kitchen closes 12 restaurants
True Food Kitchen filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on October 4, 2026, and closed 12 restaurants as part of a broader restructuring effort. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based chain said the closures were intended to help streamline operations, improve its financial position, and create a more sustainable business.
The restaurants served their final customers on October 4. The closures reduced the chain’s footprint from 46 locations to 34 restaurants across 14 states, according to the company’s announcement.
The shuttered locations include restaurants in California, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Virginia.
Founded in 2008 by restaurateur Sam Fox and physician Andrew Weil, True Food Kitchen built its brand around health-focused dining, offering dishes made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients. Media personality Oprah Winfrey has also been an investor in the company.
Chain seeks buyer through bankruptcy process
True Food Kitchen plans to pursue a court-supervised sale as part of its Chapter 11 proceedings. The goal is to find a long-term partner with the financial resources and strategic alignment needed to support the brand’s future.
The company has also secured a commitment for approximately $20 million in debtor-in-possession financing, subject to court approval. Such financing can help a business continue operating while it works through bankruptcy restructuring.
The bankruptcy filing follows years of operational challenges, including management turnover, changes in expansion strategy, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to court filings.
Not necessarily the end
Despite the closures, True Food Kitchen emphasized that it is not going out of business. Its remaining 34 restaurants continue operating, and the company says customers can still dine at open locations as usual.
The restructuring will determine whether the chain can stabilize its finances and secure a buyer to support its next chapter.
