Arizona has already had an economically tough 2025.
The trade war has been really hurting border states (especially Texas)…
Case in point – Arizona has suffered a series of painful factory closures as companies have ratcheted back spending and cut jobs wherever they can.
Unfortunately, the pain looks poised to continue, as Arizona recently lost another factory – International Paper’s recycling facility in Phoenix.

The food and beverage industry across the USA has been under tremendous pressure this year, as the trade war provided a double-whammy of bad news:
- Increased layoffs and hiring slowdowns have led domestic consumers to ratchet back their spending as recession fears grow…
- And simultaneously, international buyers have been boycotting American goods!
So they’re facing both falling domestic and international demand – which means falling sales – which would be tough to navigate in the best of times.
These are, of course, not exactly the best of times – food companies were already dealing with stubborn inflation and labor shortages (exacerbated by ICE raids) as they struggle to make ends meet.
Put it all together, and you have a uniquely tough situation for food companies.
So they’re shedding jobs and cutting costs wherever they can – with impacts rippling out up and down the supply chain.
International Paper is one such victim – they provide paper backaging for food and beverage companies, and as demand for the products themselves has fallen, those companies have reduced their asks for packaging.
So it all makes logical sense…which is cold comfort to the workers in Arizona losing their jobs.
It’s a sad state of affairs, for sure.
