Another Arkansas factory has suddenly closed, leaving hundreds of workers without jobs and a small community reeling from the loss.
And unfortunately, it’s just one in a string of factory losses that have rocked Arkansas this year…
Viskase Companies, a longtime meat-casing manufacturer in Osceola, confirmed it has permanently shut down its plant after nearly five decades in operation.

The recent closure impacted about 220 employees, according to a notice filed with the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services.
Viskase, produces casings used in sausage and other processed meat products. The company said the decision to close the Arkansas facility was part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at “adapting to changes in market demand.”
In a brief statement, Viskase cited rising costs and shifting production priorities as key reasons for the shutdown.
The plant had been one of the larger employers in the region, providing steady work for hundreds of families over the years. Local officials said the sudden loss will have a ripple effect on nearby businesses that relied on the plant’s workforce.
The Arkansas Division of Workforce Services deployed a rapid response team to help laid-off employees apply for benefits and find new opportunities. Some nearby employers have already expressed interest in hiring displaced workers, though officials say recovery will take time.
The Osceola plant first opened in 1976, producing millions of feet of meat casing each year. Its closure ends nearly fifty years of operation and marks another blow to the state’s manufacturing base.
Another Arkansas factory – gone, along with hundreds of livelihoods.
