As if Arkansas needed more bad news.
Fresh off the painful and embarrassing loss of several factories across the state, Arkansas unfortunately has more pain to deal with.
More specifically, Cargill recently shut down its turkey processing plant in Springdale, wiping out 1,100 jobs in one fell swoop.

Turkey consumption has been on the decline for years (I’ve heard ham is making a comeback for Thanksgiving?), and avian flu of course has not helped matters at all.
Add to that the rising cost of turkey feed (thanks, inflation) and worker shortages, and you’ve got a recipe for a significant downsize in the market.
And of course, that doesn’t even address many of the specific issues that have made 2025 particularly difficult for food businesses – trade war boycotts by foreign countries, supply chain problems, and of course disruptions from ICE raids.
Given all these pressures, it’s no wonder that meatpackers are cutting back across the country.
On the “somewhat better news” front – 300 of those 1,100 laid off Arkansans were either offered other roles elsewhere by Cargill or accepted early retirement packages – leaving 800 workers seeking new employment in the rapidly deteriorating job market.
It’s a real shame – these folks came to work every day, did their jobs and did them well, and now have to find a new opportunity through no fault of their own.
