Opened in 1986 by Dexter Weaver, the restaurant became a go-to destination for classic Southern comfort food and a fixture in downtown Athens.

Weaver D’s was known not only for its fried chicken, collard greens, and mac and cheese, but also for its cultural significance. The restaurant’s slogan, “Automatic for the People,” famously inspired the title of Automatic for the People by R.E.M., cementing its place in music history.
Over the years, it attracted locals, students, and visitors alike, all drawn to its authentic food and welcoming atmosphere.
Why it closed

The building was sold to Joe Nedza, the founder of Baddies Burgers. Nedza plans to open ‘Hot or Not Chicken Shack’ in Weaver D’s previous location, describing it as a cross between Dave’s Hot Chicken and Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers.
