Intro

Do you remember going to Chi-Chi’s?
Well, time flies because it’s been almost 20 years since the last Chi-Chi’s closed its doors in the U.S.
For many of us, it was THE sit-down Mexican place. The closest one to me was an hour’s drive away, but the fried ice cream was worth the hassle!
Believe it or not, Chi-Chi’s is coming back in 2025. Here are all the details we know so far (including locations)!

Where’s Chi-Chi’s been?

At its peak, Chi-Chi’s had over 200 locations, but by 2004, they were all shut down in the U.S.
If you’ve wanted your dose of nostalgia the past two decades, you’ve had to settle for getting Chi-Chi’s salsa and related items from your grocery store (made by Hormel Foods, which owns the trademarks).
Or you could have gone to Europe…

The last Chi-Chi’s on earth

Even after the U.S. locations closed, there were some left in Europe.
But today there’s only a single one left in Vienna, Austria of all places.
That’s soon to change…

How Chi-Chi’s rose from the dead

It sounds like a movie script, but the son of one of the founders is bringing Chi-Chi’s back.
He’s made an agreement with Hormel Foods to be able to open up Chi-Chi’s restaurants.

Where the first two Chi-Chi’s will be…

The plan is to open the first two Chi-Chi’s in Minnesota in 2025. That’s where Chi-Chi’s began originally.
If those succeed, we could see more in the Midwest and East Coast.
In the meantime, we can salivate over what we’ll be ordering! Chajitas, anyone? Let me know in the comments section!
