Barbecue chain closes majority of Michigan locations after bankruptcy filing

Barbecue fans in Michigan are seeing fewer options as a once-popular chain continues to scale back operations nationwide. The closures come as part of a broader restructuring effort tied to bankruptcy filing from its parent company, which occurred in late January 2026.

Smokey Bones shrinking

Smokey Bones is a casual dining barbecue chain known for its slow-smoked meats, grilled favorites, and sports bar-style atmosphere. Founded in 1999 by Darden Restaurants, the brand quickly expanded across the U.S. before facing challenges in recent years.

Closures in Michigan

The two notable closures in the state include locations in Grand Rapids and Utica (both closed September 2025). The Utica restaurant had served the community for only three years before quietly shutting its doors, reflecting a wider trend of declining traffic at casual dining chains. 

Following the closures, only one Smokey Bones location remains in the state of Michigan, and is located in Lansing.

Part of a larger national strategy

The Michigan closures are not isolated cases. Smokey Bones has been undergoing a significant downsizing effort following the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing of its parent company, FAT Brands, in early 2026. As part of the restructuring, the company has been reevaluating its portfolio and closing lower-performing restaurants.

Leadership has also been converting some Smokey Bones locations into Twin Peaks sports bar concepts, which have proven to generate stronger sales and higher customer engagement.

A rapid decline in locations

At its peak, Smokey Bones operated roughly 120 restaurants across the United States. That number has dropped significantly in recent years as closures continue and the brand narrows its focus. 

Like many casual dining chains, Smokey Bones has faced mounting pressure from inflation, higher labor and food costs, and increased competition from fast-casual and takeout-focused concepts.
