Why Use Homemade Body Butter
This Homemade Vanilla Body Butter recipe uses our base recipe, then adds vanilla bean for a yummy twist. Knowing what is in your beauty products is so important to understand how the ingredients treat your skin. Artificial colors and other synthetic elements can cause irritation or redness because of how their chemical make-up reacts with the body. Ensuring only the cleanest and purest products touch your skin is the surest way to limit uncomfortable reactions.
There are only four essential ingredients in this Homemade Vanilla Body Butter recipe: coconut oil, cocoa butter, vanilla bean, and vitamin E oil. All are naturally derived and proven to be excellent moisturizers. Vanilla bean even has firming power for loose skin and wrinkles! If desired, essential oils are an optional addition and can provide a supplementary scent plus aromatherapy effects. Oils like lavender and orange pair very well with the vanilla.
After just a few quick steps, you will soon be enjoying this gorgeous homemade vanilla body butter for your own – your skin will thank you!
Ingredients
Coconut Oil – We may be biased, but coconut oil is the best foundation for a creamy, dreamy body butter. It is high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that fight the signs of aging. Once melted and mixed with the other ingredients, coconut oil whips into the loveliest butter! Look for unrefined or virgin labels to ensure you’re picking the best product for your skin.
Cocoa Butter – Cocoa butter is derived from roasted cacao beans – which is why it naturally smells like chocolate! It both moisturizes and creates a barrier to keep the skin from losing moisture. Like coconut oil, it is high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which improve skin tone over time.
Vanilla Bean – Actual vanilla bean is used in this recipe to give the body butter a gorgeous vanilla scent, as well as an anti-aging effect for the skin. Using a vanilla bean is an excellent way to add a natural aroma without using an artificial additive. However if you would prefer to use a liquid scent, use 2 teaspoons of vanilla bean essential oil specifically – not extract or fragrance oil.
Vitamin E Oil – Vitamin E oil has a strong ability to protect skin from potential damage, such as from sunburn or exposure to pollutants, while also working to soothe scars and wrinkles. When purchased in liquid form in a carrier oil (the one we chose is safflower oil), it is an excellent addition for your homemade body butter to increase its skin smoothing power.
Essential Oils (optional) – Essential oils, like lavender and orange, will complement the vanilla in the Homemade Vanilla Body Butter. Lavender essential oil also has calming abilities, while orange essential oil can uplift one’s mood.
How to Make Homemade Vanilla Body Butter
Step One: Melt the coconut oil and cocoa butter in a double boiler over low heat.
Step Two: Once melted, remove front heat and let cool until semi-solid, but still soft (~2 hours). Move to the fridge to hasten the process.
Step Three: While the mixture is cooling, blitz the vanilla bean into very fine pieces using a coffee bean grinder or small food processor.
Step Four: When the mixture is semi-solid, use a standing or handheld mixer with whisk attachments to whip the mixture into a fluffy cream.
Step Five: Add the vanilla bean, vitamin E oil, and essential oils (if using). Whip again to incorporate.
Step Six: Scoop the body butter into an airtight jar. Store in a cool, dry place for up to six months. Use it daily for hydrated, gorgeous skin!
Note – Because actual vanilla bean is used in this recipe, there will be small bits left on your skin that do not absorb. If this will bother you, replace the vanilla bean with 2 teaspoons of vanilla essential oil.
