Whipped shea butter is a lovely moisturizer that melts on your skin and offers moisture all day long. This homemade body butter recipe is made with natural ingredients like raw shea butter and olive oil, and comes together in under five minutes.

If you love whipped body butter but are looking for a simple recipe, this one’s for you! I love coconut oil, but for some skin types it can be drying. Shea butter is a great alternative to coconut oil and is very soothing to dry skin. This two-ingredient recipe is made with shea butter (you can use refined or unrefined shea butter) and a liquid carrier oil to make a soft whipped body butter.
Ingredients for Whipped Shea Butter:
- Four ounces of Shea Butter: I used refined shea butter because I don’t love the smell of raw shea butter, but either will work in this recipe.
- 1-2 tablespoons of a liquid oil: I used olive oil, but other skin-nourishing oils like jojoba oil or sweet almond oil are great choices.
- (optional) essential oils: If you’d like to add a scent to your body butter, add a few drops of lavender essential oil or your favorite essential oils.Â
How To Make Whipped Shea Butter
There are two methods for making whipped shea butter. The easy method is with the food processor. Make the whipped butter this way is easy and results in a light-weight moisturizer. The second method requires melting the shea butter, mixing it with the olive oil, letting the oils cool, then whip them with a hand mixer. Both methods work well, but if you melt the shea butter and it gets too hot, it can result in a gritty texture.

1st Method: Food Processor
Scoop the shea butter into the food processor and add in one tablespoon of olive oil. Place the lid on the processor and mix until the oils cream together. If you’re using an essential oil, add 4-6 drops and mix well. Use a spatula to scoop the body butter out of the food processor and store the it in a glass jar. Store the moisturizer at room temperature for up to 6 months. Note: If you’d like your whipped shea butter thinner, add in an extra tablespoon of olive oil and whip in the food processor.
2nd Method: Hand Mixer
Measure the shea butter and place it in a double boiler. Melt the shea butter and keep it on the double boiler for at least ten minutes to ensure the fatty acids melt. After it’s fully melted, remove it from the heat and mix it with the olive oil and essential oils. Mix well and quickly. Pour the mixture into a small bowl and place it in the freezer to set. Let the shea mixture cool in the freezer for 45 minutes to an hour. Remove from the freezer and use an electric hand mixer to whip the body butter. Whip until the butter is creamy and thick and the consistency you like. Store the natural whipped shea butter in a clean glass jar or container.
