Indiana just keeps taking hits this year.
Fresh off a string of factory closures across the state…
Indiana really could have used some good news.
Instead, the unemployment situation seems to just keep getting worse.
Because Hostess recently announced that it’s planning to close its factory in Indianapolis.

They’re expecting to eliminate 371 jobs as part of the shutdown, which is slated for sometime in 2026.
Of course, it’s good that the hardworking Indianans working at the plant have lots of heads-up before their jobs are eliminated – it gives them time to plan – but it also means that they go into work every day, knowing that this work will all end soon.
It’s a shame, all across the board.
The backstory here is, unfortunately, pretty straightforward.
Americans have been edging away from packaged sweet baked snacks like those Hostess offers for years. The market’s been in a downtrend for quite some time.
And of course, once you pile on more recent developments like the incoming SNAP bans on junk food..
Plus the overall economic slowdown (in part thanks to a trade war that was supposed to protect American manufacturing but seems to have had the opposite effect)…
And stubborn food inflation and labor shortages…
Well, it’s created something of a perfect storm.
So it makes sense that J.M. Smucker (Hostess’ corporate owner) is looking to trim expenses and stabilize the brand.
But that doesn’t change the fact that this is a raw deal for workers, who will have to find new jobs in what’s looking like an increasingly grim economy.
It’s a shame. If you have any good ideas or encouragement to share with them, please leave a comment on this article! We’ve all got to support each other in these hard times.
