Another day, another iconic brand shutting down a factory.
This time it’s Hostess – maker of all kinds of delicious snacks and cakes – closing its iconic plant in Indianapolis by the end of 2026. That’s an estimated 260 jobs on the line, although if Smucker successfully sells the plant, perhaps some of those jobs could be preserved. (Pure speculation on my part.)

The J.M. Smucker Company bought Hostess in 2023, and the business has been troubled. In fact, Smucker took a $1 billion non-cash impairment charge earlier this year related primarily to the underperformance of its Hostess brand.
That Smucker would look to reduce expenses and streamline operations is not shocking given these developments.
And if Hostess and the gradual sweet baked snacks category doesn’t recover, we shouldn’t be surprised to see more closures and layoffs as well. If the demand isn’t there, it makes sense to reduce production.
It’s a sad state of affairs for an iconic brand. I may have to go buy some Hostess cupcakes to show my support. Speaking of which…
