A longtime breakfast and brunch favorite has suddenly cut its restaurant footprint in half. The closures affect two New York City locations, leaving just two restaurants still operating under the brand.
Two restaurants permanently close
Sarabeth’s, the New York City restaurant and bakery known for its breakfasts, brunches and baked goods, has permanently closed its Park Avenue South and Greenwich Village locations. Both restaurants ended service on Sunday, August 16.
The closures leave Sarabeth’s with two remaining restaurants: its Upper West Side location and its Central Park South restaurant, which is considered the brand’s flagship.
The company said the economics of operating the two shuttered restaurants were no longer sustainable.
The Park Avenue South location had been open since 2013, while the Greenwich Village restaurant opened in late 2024, making its closure particularly notable after less than two years in business.
Rising costs create challenges
Sarabeth’s closures come as restaurants nationwide continue to contend with higher labor, food, rent and other operating expenses.
Food-away-from-home prices were 3.4% higher in July than they were a year earlier, according to data cited by TheStreet. Restaurant operators are also facing consumers who are becoming increasingly selective about spending money on dining out.
The closures are not the first time Sarabeth’s has reduced its New York footprint. The restaurant’s Tribeca location closed in 2024, while its Chelsea Market bakery shut down earlier this year.
Two locations remain open
Despite the closures, Sarabeth’s is not going out of business entirely.
The Upper West Side and Central Park South restaurants remain open, allowing customers to continue visiting the nearly 45-year-old brand.
Founded in Manhattan in 1981, Sarabeth’s grew from a small bakery into a well-known New York restaurant brand. For longtime customers, the latest closures represent a significant change for a business that has been part of the city’s dining scene for decades.
