Wishbone is closing its final location
Wishbone, a longtime Chicago restaurant known for Southern comfort food and brunch, will close its West Loop location at the end of August 2026.
Owners Joel and Julie Nickson opened the first Wishbone in 1990 on West Grand Avenue. Over the years, the restaurant became known for dishes including shrimp and grits, fried chicken, biscuits, cornbread, and other Southern favorites.
The restaurant eventually expanded beyond its original location, operating multiple Chicago restaurants before consolidating its operations at the West Loop location.
The West Loop restaurant is the final remaining Wishbone location, and its closure will bring the restaurant’s 36-year run to an end.
Owners say independent restaurants face challenges
Joel Nickson said it has become increasingly difficult to operate an independent restaurant in Chicago. He plans to keep Wishbone open through the end of August, giving longtime customers an opportunity to return for one more meal.
The restaurant has developed a particularly loyal following over the decades. Its history includes connections to Chicago’s media and entertainment scene, including appearances associated with The Oprah Winfrey Show.
