New Jersey has lost another longtime neighborhood food institution as familiar restaurants continue disappearing across the state. Beyond the Bagel in Upper Montclair closed after 30 years in business, ending a daily routine for generations of local customers.
The Bellevue Avenue shop served its final customers on September 13. Owner Tina Ganan had worked there for a decade before taking ownership 20 years ago, meaning much of her adult life was tied to the counter, the ovens and the people walking through the door. The Montclair Girl reported that Ganan said high rent, rising expenses and insufficient income had made it impossible to keep going.

More than a morning bagel stop
Beyond the Bagel offered the staples its name suggested, including bagels and breakfast sandwiches, but the menu grew well beyond that. Customers could also order omelets, deli-style sandwiches, smoothies and coffee, and the shop even added pizza during its final year.
That breadth helped make it useful throughout the day, but its deeper appeal was familiarity. Ganan spent 30 years watching customers and their families pass through the shop. Children grew up, regulars became older regulars and a quick breakfast stop became part of the neighborhoodโs rhythm.
Rising costs finally caught up
The closing was not presented as a voluntary retirement. Ganan said the shop was no longer bringing in enough money to cover what it cost to operate. She tried to negotiate with the landlord but was unable to reach an agreement that would allow the business to continue, and she said she expected to file for bankruptcy.
Competition in Montclairโs bagel market had also increased, with newer shops opening around town while established operators continued to face higher food, labor and occupancy costs. Still, the closure of Beyond the Bagel feels different from a young concept that never caught on. Three decades is long enough for a business to become part of a neighborhoodโs identity.
A 30-year relationship with Upper Montclair
Bagel shops are easy to underestimate because they are often built around ordinary routines rather than special occasions. But those routines are exactly what make them meaningful. The person behind the counter knows the regular order. Parents stop in with children. Commuters grab breakfast on the way to work. Neighbors see one another without planning to meet.
Beyond the Bagel did that for Upper Montclair for 30 years. Its closing removes more than another breakfast option from Bellevue Avenue. It ends a long-running relationship between one owner, one storefront and generations of customers who had come to treat the place as part of everyday life.
