Beloved New York restaurant closes after 30 years, marking the end of an era

For three decades, it was a go-to destination for theatergoers, tourists and New Yorkers looking for a memorable meal before a show at Carnegie Hall.

Now, one of Midtown Manhattan’s most recognizable restaurants has served its final customers, bringing an end to a 30-year run that made it a neighborhood institution.

Redeye Grill serves its final meals

Redeye Grill permanently closed on July 12 after operating across from Carnegie Hall since opening in 1995. Founded by legendary restaurateur Shelly Fireman, the American brasserie became known for its seafood, steaks and lively atmosphere, attracting everyone from Broadway audiences to celebrities and business travelers. 

The restaurant announced its closure in a farewell message thanking guests, employees and the community for supporting the business over the past three decades.

“Our founder, Shelly, was so proud of what he and his team accomplished at Redeye Grill,” the restaurant wrote, adding that its greatest achievement was becoming part of so many people’s lives. 

Famous shrimp…and guests

Among Redeye Grill’s best-known menu items was its signature “Dancing Shrimp” appetizer, featuring oversized coconut-battered shrimp presented in a theatrical display that became one of the restaurant’s trademarks.

Over the years, the restaurant welcomed celebrities including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston and Ethan Hawke, while countless concertgoers and Broadway fans made it part of their New York tradition. 

Lease dispute ends a longtime institution

According to multiple reports, Redeye Grill’s closure followed unsuccessful lease negotiations with its landlord after the restaurant’s lease expired. While the restaurant has closed, Fireman Hospitality Group continues to operate several other well-known Manhattan restaurants. 

The loss of Redeye Grill marks another high-profile closure for New York City’s restaurant industry, underscoring the challenges even long-established dining destinations face as rising costs, changing consumer habits and real estate pressures continue reshaping the hospitality landscape.
