Beloved North Carolina BBQ restaurant closes after decades, but one tradition will live on

Now, Boss Hog BBQ in Sherrills Ford has officially closed its doors, ending a decades-long run that made it a fixture in North Carolina’s Lake Norman area. The family-owned restaurant served its final customers on July 4, with owners announcing the closure in an emotional farewell to the community.

A community staple says goodbye

In a message shared before closing, the owners thanked customers for years of support and reflected on the memories made at the restaurant, from catering weddings and church luncheons to celebrating graduations and family milestones.

Boss Hog BBQ became known for its smoked barbecue, ribs, pulled pork, seafood and classic Southern sides, earning a loyal following among both residents and visitors to the Lake Norman region. According to local reports, the restaurant had served the community since 1989, though many customers viewed it as a multigenerational tradition.

Food truck will continue serving customers

While the restaurant has closed, fans won’t have to say goodbye entirely. The owners confirmed that The Boss’ Backyard Wagon, the restaurant’s food truck, will continue operating at events and around the region.

No specific reason for the closure was announced. However, local reports noted that the restaurant’s 7.5-acre property is under contract, fueling speculation that the site could eventually be redeveloped as growth continues around Lake Norman.

End of an era

Boss Hog BBQ joins a growing list of longtime independent restaurants that have closed across the country amid changing market conditions and redevelopment pressures.

For many longtime customers, however, the lasting memories won’t be tied to the building itself, but to the family meals, celebrations and neighborhood connections that made Boss Hog BBQ a beloved local institution for decades.
