Arizona’s restaurant industry experienced several unexpected losses in 2026 as longtime neighborhood favorites and newer concepts alike closed their doors. Whether driven by redevelopment, financial pressures, or changing business priorities, these five closures surprised diners across the Grand Canyon State.
1. Old Heidelberg Bakery
After serving Phoenix for 57 years, Old Heidelberg Bakery closed its doors in April. Since opening in 1969, the family-owned bakery had become a destination for German breads, pastries, pretzels, and imported European goods, making its departure one of the year’s biggest losses for local food lovers.
2. Giuseppe’s on 28th
Arcadia favorite Giuseppe’s on 28th closed in March after owner Richard Bock retired following a 24-year run. Known for its homemade Italian cuisine and appearances on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, the restaurant had earned a devoted following over the years.
3. Francine
Scottsdale’s upscale French restaurant Francine quietly closed this spring, catching many customers by surprise. Located at Scottsdale Fashion Square since 2020, the restaurant built a reputation for coastal French cuisine before abruptly shutting its doors with little advance notice.
4. El Chullo
The original El Chullo location in Phoenix permanently closed in January after 12 years. Widely credited with introducing many Valley diners to authentic Peruvian cuisine, the restaurant became a local favorite for dishes such as ceviche, lomo saltado, and pollo saltado before the owners shifted their focus to a second location.
5. Golden Oak Barbecue and Taproom
Golden Oak Barbecue and Taproom had barely begun making its mark before closing less than four months after opening. Despite positive reviews for its barbecue and craft beer, disputes with neighboring property owners and financial challenges forced the downtown Phoenix restaurant to shut down in early February.
While Arizona continues to welcome dozens of new restaurants each year, these closures serve as a reminder that even well-loved eateries can face difficult challenges. For many diners, the loss of these establishments means saying goodbye to places that helped define the state’s vibrant culinary scene.
