Everyone’s heard of McDonald’s, and everyone’s heard of its biggest rival: Burger King. These two burger joints have long been the subjects of an age-old debate about which chain whips up tastier fast food.
The debate may be ongoing, but for vegans in particular there may be a clear winner. If you’re on a vegan diet, chances are you’ve come to favor Burger King over McDonald’s, because the restaurant simply dishes out more vegan options on their menu.
So what are your options, exactly, if you follow a vegan diet and want to enjoy a meal at Burger King? We’ve gathered every vegan-friendly item on Burger King’s current menu so you know just what to order next time you drive through the drive-thru.
Vegan food and drinks available on the Burger King menu
Let’s start with one of the biggest questions: does Burger King offer a plant-based burger? The answer for those of us in America is unfortunately a tricky one: yes and no. While Burger King has built extensive vegan menus in many of their international locations, the plant-based items are more limited here in the US.
However, Burger King has tested several plant-based sandwiches and menu items in the US, like the Original Chik’n Sandwich and plant-based chicken nuggets. While many of those items are no longer available, the restaurant does offer one plant-based burger nationwide: the Impossible™ Whopper, made with an Impossible™ patty. The sandwich is made with mayonnaise, ketchup, lettuce, white onion, and pickles on a sesame bun (just be sure to order it without mayo to keep the burger vegan-friendly). The catch, however, is that this plant-based burger is only available at certain locations.
If you don’t happen to live near one of those locations, you can still find something vegan-friendly on the Burger King menu. While all of the meat-based meals and dairy-filled desserts are obviously not suitable for a vegan diet, Burger King does offer a handful of vegan-friendly items aside from the plant-based Impossible™ Whopper – including french fries, hash browns, and a couple of other sides and breakfast items.
You may want to keep in mind that even if something is vegan by nature, if it’s cooked it’s most likely prepared using a shared toaster or fryer. As long as you’re okay with that, then you have several options at Burger King if you want to order a vegan-friendly meal since the chain does not use animal-derived frying oil.

Burger King’s Impossible Whopper is made with a plant-based Impossible Patty. The main ingredients include water, soy protein concentrate, sunflower oil, coconut oil, and natural flavors. Aside from the patty, the burger itself is made with mayonnaise, ketchup, lettuce, white onion, pickles, and a sesame bun.
The Impossible Whopper is available at select Burger King locations across the US. Since availability varies depending on your region, you can check ahead with your local Burger King or use the store locator feature on Burger King’s website to verify which locations offer this menu item.
While Burger King’s french fries and hash browns are vegan, unfortunately the onion rings are not vegan-friendly. This is due to the fact that the batter recipe is made with whey, which is a derivative of milk and thus a dairy product.
The Dutch Apple Pie, which was a vegan-friendly dessert item on Burger King’s menu, was discontinued as of 2020 and is no longer available at Burger King restaurants.
