California still doesn’t have a Buc-ee’s, but a mysterious banner in northern San Diego County gave fans a fresh reason to wonder. The sign promised “Buc-ee’s Coming Soon” in Rancho Bernardo, instantly stirring up hopes that the Texas travel-center chain was finally headed to the Golden State.
For now, this is a rumor story—not an opening announcement. The closer the available details are examined, the less the site looks like a genuine Buc-ee’s project.

What sparked the latest California rumor
The speculation began after a branded banner appeared on fencing around the former El Torito property at 16375 Bernardo Center Drive. A photo circulated online, and MySA reported on July 6 that Buc-ee’s had not announced a California location or responded to its request for details.
The property itself is the biggest reason for skepticism. The former restaurant site is roughly 12,000 square feet on less than an acre, while modern Buc-ee’s travel centers typically need dozens of acres for a huge store, extensive parking and rows of fuel pumps. Even Buc-ee’s smaller legacy stores do not make this parcel a natural fit for the chain’s current expansion model.
There is another complication: local records show a conditional use permit for a cannabis outlet covering part of the building, and The Cake House now lists its Rancho Bernardo shop at that exact address. The permit, issued in May 2025, was reported as remaining active through February 2029. A banner on a demolition fence does not establish that Buc-ee’s controls the property.
What has changed since the earlier California update
The Rancho Bernardo sign appeared after our June look at why California remained outside Buc-ee’s footprint, so it added a specific address to the rumor mill. It did not add the pieces that accompany a real project: a company announcement, a large interstate site, a development application or a confirmed construction schedule.
Buc-ee’s has moved closer to California geographically. Its Goodyear, Arizona, travel center opened June 22 along Interstate 10, making the brand more accessible to Southern California road-trippers. Still, the company’s current location directory does not list a California store, and fresh searches through October 19 turned up no later announcement validating the Rancho Bernardo banner.
What California fans should know
There is no confirmed California Buc-ee’s, no verified opening date and no evidence that construction is underway at the rumored site. The banner may have been a prank or fan-made stunt; without confirmation from Buc-ee’s or local development records tying the company to the parcel, it should not be treated as a promise.
California could eventually attract a Buc-ee’s along a roomy interstate corridor, especially as the chain expands west. But the latest San Diego-area buzz does not appear to be that breakthrough. For now, California’s most talked-about Buc-ee’s “opening” remains a roadside rumor.
