Americans have no shortage of opinions about frozen treats, as shown by a customer-data ranking of the country’s favorite milkshakes. A fresh online debate proves that rankings and personal taste do not always arrive at the same winner.
When one person asked Reddit to name the best fast-food milkshake and “make your case,” the discussion drew answers from across the country. Familiar national names appeared alongside regional chains, and one especially confident vote summed up the Culver’s camp in three words: “Culver’s. No competition.”

Culver’s gets a boost from frozen custard
Culver’s appeared repeatedly in the replies, with one person singling out the banana shake. The Wisconsin-based chain has a built-in point of distinction: its shakes are made with Fresh Frozen Custard rather than a standard soft-serve base. Culver’s says that custard is prepared throughout the day with fresh dairy, and its current menu offers both shakes and malts.
But there was no runaway winner. Five Guys earned praise for customization, including mix-ins that can turn a vanilla base into combinations featuring coffee, fruit, cookies, peanut butter or even bacon. The chain’s current menu confirms that coffee is available alongside options such as strawberry, Oreo, salted caramel and Reese’s Cups.
Regional favorites make a strong case
Braum’s received several short but enthusiastic endorsements. One commenter praised its combination of quality and price, while another pointed to the company’s dairy operation. Braum’s says its milkshakes use dairy from its own farm, a supply-chain detail that gives fans a concrete reason for their loyalty. Availability is the tradeoff, since many readers do not live near one of its stores.
Other votes were driven by signature flavors. Arby’s supporters repeatedly named the Jamocha Shake, which blends coffee and chocolate flavors. Sonic fans praised the strawberry cheesecake shake and its drinkable texture, while Shake Shack won over one commenter with a half-vanilla, half-chocolate option that was rich without being overly sweet. Cook Out, Freddy’s, Jack in the Box, Whataburger and In-N-Out also collected votes.
The thread included criticism, too. One former Sonic fan compared two recent shakes to “warm styrofoam,” and a Braum’s customer said a bad visit had ended the relationship. Those sharply different reports are a reminder that temperature, texture and restaurant execution can matter almost as much as the recipe.
Reddit did not settle the milkshake question, but it clarified what fans value: thick texture, real dairy flavor, distinctive mix-ins and a price that still feels reasonable. Culver’s may have inspired the boldest declaration, yet the lively field of contenders suggests the best shake is often the one tied to a favorite flavor—or the regional chain someone wishes were closer to home.
