A longtime grocery store in a wealthy California community is preparing to shut its doors this fall. The closure will leave dozens of employees without jobs and remove a major grocery option from the area.
Silver Creek Community Market is closing
Silver Creek Community Market in San Jose is scheduled to permanently close on September 20, 2026, according to a WARN notice filed with the state.
The closure will affect 61 employees, all of whom are expected to be laid off when the store shuts down. The market is located at 5667 Silver Creek Valley Road and is operated by Santa Cruz-based New Leaf Community Markets.
The store is New Leaf’s only location in San Jose and Santa Clara County. The company, which specializes in natural and organic groceries, operates five other stores in the Central Coast region, including locations in Santa Cruz, Aptos, Capitola, and Half Moon Bay.
Reason for closure remains unclear
Laura Ramsey, director of human resources with New Leaf Community Markets, said there are “…not enough people to really make a run there for a grocery store” as a reason for the closure.
An employee told SFGATE that lease negotiations were a factor in the decision, although that explanation has not been officially confirmed by the company. The grocery store is located inside Canyon Creek Plaza, which has undergone changes in ownership in recent years.
Community will lose a major grocery option
The closure is expected to have an impact beyond the 61 affected employees. Silver Creek Community Market serves as an anchor for Canyon Creek Plaza and is one of the area’s primary full-service grocery stores.
Residents will still have alternatives, including Bonfare Market, Sprouts, and Walmart, although some are several miles away.
For now, Silver Creek Community Market is expected to remain open until September 20, giving local shoppers and employees only a limited amount of time before the longtime grocery store disappears from the neighborhood.
