California is having a rough 2025, no doubt about it.
With manufacturing jobs fleeing the state en masse…
And whole companies exiting for greener pastures…
And even whole industries shutting down…
The last thing Californians needed was to lose a bunch of grocery stores, too.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening, as a number of chains and independent grocery stores shut down in response to the deepening economic crisis.
A partial list of 2025 closures:
- Carla’s Fresh Market in Highland Park, LA – which closed just last week
- Draeger’s Market in downtown San Mateo
- Safeway on Webster Street in the Fillmore District of San Francisco
- Safeway at Tara Hills Drive in Pinole
- Safeway at Admiral Callaghan Lane in Vallejo
- Amazon Fresh in Thousand Oaks
- Amazon Go in Woodland Hills
Every closed grocery store means it’s just that much harder for nearby Californians to access healthy, fresh food – and that’s a real shame.
