Crabcake Factory Bayside, a popular family‑owned waterfront restaurant in Fenwick Island, Delaware, is closed indefinitely after a vehicle drove into the building on the afternoon of January 4, 2026. The crash caused significant structural damage, forcing state and local officials to shut down the restaurant until further notice.
Crash details and police response
According to records from the Roxana Volunteer Fire Company, the accident occurred around 1:33 p.m. on January 4, when an elderly driver inadvertently drove their vehicle through the front of Crabcake Factory Bayside on Lighthouse Road. Fire crews found that all occupants — including people inside the restaurant, had already exited the vehicle and the building by the time they arrived.
Emergency responders evaluated patients and secured electrical and gas lines to prevent further hazards while the vehicle was removed from the scene. No serious injuries were reported. One restaurant employee was treated for minor soreness and bruises, and received stitches for a small wound, while the elderly driver and their spouse were left “rattled but fine“, the business said on social media.
Business reaction and community support
In a social media post on January 5, the Mushrush family — owners of the restaurant — thanked the community for its support and emphasized that the crash was an accident involving a family enjoying lunch.
Local restaurants are rallying to support the affected staff, including a fundraiser where a portion of proceeds will be donated to employees. A GoFundMe campaign has also been started to assist workers during the closure.
What’s next for the restaurant
At this time, no official timeline for repairs or reopening has been announced. (The same type of temporary closure occurs for restaurant health code violations – just under very different circumstances!)
The owners noted that they are assessing the damage and will share updates when available. Patrons familiar with the restaurant’s waterfront location and loyal customer base are watching closely for news of when it might welcome guests again.
