For years, it was a familiar stop for coffee, pastries, and conversation just outside downtown Rehoboth Beach. Now, longtime customers are saying goodbye to one of the area’s best-known local cafés after an abrupt closure announcement.
A bittersweet farewell for a Rehoboth Beach favorite
The Point Coffee House and Bake Shoppe officially closed its doors on March 19, ending a 15-year run serving the Rehoboth Beach community. The coffee shop and bakery announced the news in a heartfelt message to customers, calling the decision “bittersweet” and thanking patrons for years of support.
Located at the fork of Route 1 and Rehoboth Avenue Extended, the café had become a regular gathering place for locals and vacationers alike since opening in 2010. Before becoming The Point, the location operated as Oby Lee’s Coffee Roastery, another well-known name in the local coffee scene.
Customers react to the sudden closure
The closure sparked an emotional response online, with many customers sharing memories of morning coffee runs, vacation traditions, and favorite baked goods. Some described the café as a must-visit stop whenever they were in town, while others expressed disappointment that they did not get one final visit before the doors closed.
Management also shared information for customers with unused gift cards. Refunds were made available in person for a limited time, while additional arrangements could be made through the company’s accounting department. Customers were also offered the option to exchange balances for gift cards connected to Victoria’s Restaurant.
End of an era
The Point’s closure adds to a growing list of longtime independent restaurants and cafés shutting down across the country amid rising operating costs and changing business conditions. For many in Rehoboth Beach, however, the loss feels especially personal because of the shop’s deep connection to the local community.
