Connecticut is losing another local food destination, just months after a longtime Brookfield waterfront restaurant ended its own five-decade run. This time, the closing involves the state’s only Food Emporium—and the supermarket did not even make it to its first anniversary.
The Food Emporium at 731 Federal Road in Brookfield will permanently close at the end of July, according to town officials cited by CT Insider. The approximately 10,000-square-foot store opened in late November 2025, meaning it will have operated for only about nine months.
Sales reportedly fell well short
Brookfield Economic Development Manager Greg Dembowski said the supermarket never reached the sales volume its operators expected. Company representatives had not publicly provided their own explanation when the closure was reported, but the store entered a crowded grocery corridor from the beginning.
Shoppers along Federal Road already have access to ShopRite, Big Y, BJ’s Wholesale Club and Costco. Stew Leonard’s also operates just across the Danbury line. That is a difficult group of established competitors for a roughly 10,000-square-foot newcomer to challenge, particularly when shoppers are watching grocery prices closely.
Food Emporium also lacked the name recognition in Connecticut that it once enjoyed in New York, Connecticut Food Association President Wayne Pesce told CT Insider. The brand was once associated with A&P, which went out of business in 2015. Key Food Stores Cooperative later acquired the Food Emporium name.
The chain’s Connecticut experiment is ending
The Brookfield supermarket is Food Emporium’s only Connecticut location. Once it closes, the brand’s remaining stores will be concentrated in New York City, Long Island and New Jersey.
Its brief run followed a lengthy buildup. The store had originally been expected to open in 2023, but construction delays pushed the debut into late 2025. That makes the shutdown especially notable: Brookfield waited years for the supermarket, only to lose it within months.
There may at least be a quick second act for the property. Dembowski said prospective tenants have already examined the space and described it as a strong downtown location. For residents, however, the immediate question is whether Food Emporium will announce a final shopping day, clearance discounts or any transition plan before July ends.
