Costco is making shopping faster and easier with several new member-focused upgrades

Long checkout lines have long been one of the biggest frustrations for Costco shoppers, especially during weekends and peak shopping hours.

Now, the warehouse retailer is rolling out a series of technology upgrades designed to make shopping more convenient, both inside its warehouses and online.

New technology is speeding up checkout

Costco executives say recent technology investments are already improving the shopping experience for members. One of the biggest changes is the rollout of employee pre-scan technology, which allows staff to scan items while customers wait in line. The company says the system has helped improve checkout speeds by as much as 20% in stores where it has been implemented.

Costco has also expanded its digital membership card, enhanced its mobile wallet, and is testing automated pay stations that could allow pre-scanned transactions to be completed in an average of about eight seconds. The retailer says these upgrades are intended to reduce wait times and create a smoother checkout process without sacrificing accuracy.

More improvements are coming

Beyond checkout, Costco continues to invest in its digital experience. The company has introduced more personalized product recommendations through its website and app while using artificial intelligence to improve inventory management. Executives say those efforts have helped increase pharmacy in-stock rates to more than 98%, making it easier for members to find the medications they need.

Costco is also expanding same-day delivery options and refining its mobile app to make online shopping more convenient. The investments reflect a broader strategy to modernize the membership experience while preserving the value and low prices that have made the retailer one of the nation’s most popular warehouse clubs.

Although Costco has traditionally focused on keeping costs low rather than adopting new technology, the company says these upgrades are helping create a faster, more seamless shopping experience as membership continues to grow.
