Phoenix is saying goodbye to one of its longtime neighborhood Italian restaurants after Giuseppe’s on 28th announced it will permanently close on May 31, 2026, ending a 24-year run in the city.
The family-owned restaurant, located near 28th Street and Indian School Road, first opened in 2002 and became a favorite destination for customers seeking traditional Italian comfort food, pizza, pasta, and a casual family atmosphere.
Restaurant gained national attention
Giuseppe’s gained national recognition in 2008 after appearing on the Food Network series Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri. The television appearance helped introduce the restaurant to a wider audience and turned it into a must-visit spot for many Phoenix food lovers.
Over the years, the restaurant built a loyal customer base known for returning regularly for signature Italian dishes and friendly service. Many locals described the restaurant as a community staple that remained consistent even as Phoenix’s dining scene rapidly evolved.
Closure announced amid industry struggles
The closure is tied to the retirement of chef-owner Richard Bock, who purchased the restaurant in 2002.
According to local reports, Bock developed a passion for Italian cuisine while performing music in Italy before eventually bringing that influence to Phoenix through Giuseppe’s. The restaurant thanked customers in a farewell message, saying it had been “one of the greatest honors of my life” serving the community over the years.
Part of a larger closure trend
Giuseppe’s joins several other Arizona restaurants that have closed in recent months, including longtime local establishments in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Industry analysts say older independent restaurants are increasingly vulnerable as operating expenses continue climbing in 2026.
For longtime customers, Giuseppe’s closure represents the end of a familiar gathering place that served the Phoenix community for nearly a quarter century.
