A longtime Florida dining institution has closed the doors to its iconic mall location, marking the end of nearly five decades of memories for generations of customers.
Mr. Dunderbak’s, the German restaurant, deli and pub that has operated inside Volusia Mall in Daytona Beach since 1975, has officially left the shopping center and relocated to a new home in downtown Daytona Beach. While the business itself isn’t closing, the departure from the mall ends an era for one of the area’s most recognizable independent restaurants.
A Daytona Beach staple since 1975
Known for its authentic German cuisine, imported meats and cheeses, extensive beer selection and Bavarian atmosphere, Mr. Dunderbak’s became a destination for both locals and tourists over the years. Many customers made the restaurant part of family traditions, returning for favorites such as schnitzel, bratwurst and oversized deli sandwiches.
Co-owner Matt Martin said the move wasn’t driven by a lack of business, but by the limitations of operating inside the mall. The restaurant’s hours were tied to mall operations, and parking restrictions during major Daytona events often prevented the business from capitalizing on busy weekends. The family also wanted greater visibility and the flexibility to expand its offerings.
A new chapter downtown
Mr. Dunderbak’s has reopened at 116 N. Beach Street in downtown Daytona Beach, where the larger standalone location gives the restaurant room to grow. The new space offers expanded seating and allows the owners to explore extended hours, special events and other additions that weren’t possible at the mall.
Although customers can still enjoy the restaurant at its new address, the closing of its Volusia Mall location marks the end of one of Daytona Beach’s longest-running mall restaurants—a nostalgic milestone for countless Floridians who grew up dining there.
