End of an era: Popular Michigan restaurant closes after 30 years

For decades, it was the kind of place where families gathered after Friday night games, regulars knew the staff by name, and locals returned for comfort food favorites year after year. Now, another longtime Michigan restaurant has officially served its last meal.

End of the road for a longtime favorite

Bad Axe Big Boy officially closed on May 14, 2026, after more than 30 years serving customers in Michigan’s Thumb region. The closure announcement quickly drew emotional reactions from longtime diners, many of whom shared memories of family meals, post-church breakfasts, and late-night burger runs. 

Owner Darcie Humphrey-Phillips said the final days brought an overwhelming rush of customers hoping to visit the restaurant one last time. In fact, demand became so heavy that the restaurant ended up closing a day earlier than planned after running out of food and struggling to keep up with the crowds. 

Challenges facing the restaurant industry

According to Humphrey-Phillips, the decision to close came after years of mounting challenges. She pointed to changing dining habits, increased competition, and the difficulty of operating a restaurant without a liquor license in today’s market. 

Like many restaurants across the country, the business also struggled to fully recover after the COVID-19 pandemic. The owner said customers’ routines changed permanently during that time, making it difficult for traditional family restaurants to regain consistent traffic. 

The Bad Axe location was one of the last remaining restaurants operated by the family. Previous locations in Caro and Sandusky had already closed in recent years. 

A wave of nostalgia from customers

As news of the closure spread online, social media quickly filled with tributes from former employees and loyal customers. Many thanked the restaurant staff for decades of service and recalled growing up eating at the local Big Boy.

While the restaurant has closed, the owner has hinted another business could eventually open at the property in the future.
