The Publix momentum in Northern Virginia is picking up fast!
With operating stores already in Stafford and the greater Fredericksburg area — and a newly announced store coming to Manassas — it’s becoming clear that the employee-owned grocery chain is planting long-term roots in the region…and isn’t stopping there!

Publix in Stafford and Fredericksburg
In late 2020, Publix made its Northern Virginia–area debut with its store in Stafford’s Embrey Mill Town Center, a full-service grocery location that brought the chain’s well-known bakery, deli, and prepared foods to local shoppers.
In the Fredericksburg region, Publix now operates two stores — one at Cosner’s Corner and another at Chancellor Crossing. These locations have quickly become popular with families and commuters thanks to their wide aisles, strong customer service, and fresh food offerings. Publix’s growing presence around Fredericksburg and nearby Stafford shows how the company typically expands: by building a cluster of stores that support one another and build customer familiarity.
New Publix coming to Manassas
The biggest news for Northern Virginia is Publix’s newly confirmed store planned for Manassas, set for a shopping center at the corner of Dumfries Road and Spriggs Road. The store is expected to be around 50,000 square feet — a full traditional Publix, not a downsized format — and will bring around 150 jobs to the area once it opens.
While Publix has not released an official opening date yet, early expectations point to a launch sometime in 2026 or 2027. That said, delays can often happen (see the three new Buc-ee’s expected in Virginia).
When it opens, this Manassas location will become one of the chain’s northernmost stores and a major signal that Publix is intent on expanding deeper into the Washington, D.C. metro area.
Expect Publix to keep expanding north and east
If history is any guide, Publix rarely stops at just one or two stores when it enters a new region. Instead, the company tends to build multiple locations in close proximity, creating a strong regional footprint.
That means shoppers should expect Publix to continue pushing toward DC from Manassas into more heavily populated areas of Prince William County, then likely into Fairfax County — and potentially even Arlington in the future. Dense suburban neighborhoods, strong household incomes, and heavy commuter traffic make Northern Virginia an ideal expansion zone for the chain.
See a city like Miami with close to 40 stores in and around it. Now that’s Publix’s home state of Florida, but you can see there’s certainly room for expansion here!
What this means for shoppers
For residents, Publix’s ongoing expansion means more grocery choices, more competition, and easier access to the chain’s popular subs, fresh produce, and customer-focused service. And if current trends continue, this is just the beginning of the Publix era in Northern Virginia.
