Intro (continued)

In fact, many reflect flavors I’ve been hoping to see from Applebee’s for years.
And now they’re available to all of us (and for a pretty good price).
So let’s dive in, starting with one dish that’s usually a little tricky but which Applebee’s has pulled off admirably well…

Spicy honey mustard chicken sandwich

I mean, it’s all in the name, right?
My biggest complaint with honey mustard is that it’s usually a little too sweet and doesn’t have enough of the mustard-y tang.
Not an issue with spicy honey mustard, however.
It’s got all the heat you need!
In addition to the spicy honey mustard and fried chicken, the sandwich has got your standard additions: Cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and pickles.
Plus a side, of course. (You should probably just get the fries.)

But if you don’t want the fries, you have options

Some of Applebee’s sides are free to swap in, and some cost a little extra.
Let’s start with the free options:
– Seasoned broccoli
– Coleslaw
– Garlicky green beans
– Garlic mashed potatoes
– Spanish rice
(Honestly, if you’re not gonna go for the fries, just get the mashed potatoes. I could take or leave the other free sides.)

Sides available for an upcharge

Not surprisingly, here’s where we get a lot of the good stuff. I’ve included upcharge cost in parenthesis:
– Waffle fries ($2.49)
– Onion rings ($1.99)
– Cheesy broccoli ($1.99)
– Loaded garlic mashed potatoes ($0.99)
– Four cheese mac & cheese ($1.99)
Plus, of course…

Salad and soup options

You can turn your side into a salad or soup for another $1.99-$2.99, depending:
– House or Caesar salad ($1.99)
– Tomato basil soup ($1.99)
– Chicken tortilla soup ($1.99)
– French onion soup ($2.99)
So there are a lot of options.
Ok, on to the other two new dishes:

Bourbon Street chicken & andouille sausage penne

This is kind of a fun combination, because you get heat from the andouille sausage and the Cajun alfredo sauce, but it’s well balanced by the rest of the ingredients (grilled chicken, bell peppers, onions, penne), and you have the breadstick if things get too hot.
It’s a simple dish, and it’s executed well.

Blackened shrimp & andouille sausage penne

Think of this as basically the same as the dish above, but with shrimp swapped out for the chicken.
If you love seafood…well, you know what to do.

Sizzlin’ caramel apple pie

This one’s pretty straightforward.
Do you like apple pie?
How about candied pecans?
How about caramel sauce?
Vanilla ice cream?
Great, put it all together – and you’ve got Applebee’s new sizzlin’ caramel apple pie.
I’ve always loved the contrast between hot pie and cold ice cream, and this dish has that in spades.

Summary

So there you have it – five new Applebee’s dishes that are already turning heads.
I’m just thrilled to see Applebee’s experimenting with new flavors and ideas!
But here’s the big question:

What should Applebee’s do next?

What flavors would you like to see Applebee’s add to the menu next?
