A longtime Amelia Island restaurant is preparing to serve its final meals, bringing an end to a run that spans nearly seven decades. The closure marks another major change for a coastal community where the restaurant has become a familiar destination for generations of locals and visitors.
The Surf prepares to close
The Surf Restaurant, Bar & Motel in Fernandina Beach, Florida, announced August 12 that it will permanently close its restaurant operation on September 20, 2026.
Located at 3199 S. Fletcher Avenue, The Surf has been part of Amelia Island since 1957. The business describes itself as a local favorite that has welcomed guests for generations, with its beachside setting, seafood-focused menu, live music, and relaxed atmosphere helping establish its identity over the years.
The announcement brings an end to one of the area’s longest-running restaurant operations.
Why the restaurant is closing
The restaurant cited several factors behind the decision, including increasing competition, softer consumer spending, inflation, and the restaurant’s own financial performance.
Those challenges reflect broader pressures facing restaurants across the country. Higher costs for food, labor, insurance, and other operating expenses have made it increasingly difficult for independent and longtime restaurants to maintain profitability while consumers have become more selective about dining out.
The Surf’s location also places it in a highly competitive coastal tourism market, where restaurants serve both local customers and visitors.
A longtime Amelia Island fixture
The Surf has occupied its South Fletcher Avenue location for decades, becoming associated with Amelia Island’s beachside dining scene. The restaurant has also hosted community events over the years, including fundraisers and live entertainment.
Customers will have until September 20 to visit The Surf before the restaurant closes its doors permanently, ending a nearly 70-year chapter in Floridaโs dining history.
