Buffaloโs Chandler Street Breweries has begun winding down operations, closing the shared home of Community Beer Works, Thin Man Brewery and Smoldered Society Beer Company. The abrupt loss is the latest sign of a difficult stretch for small breweries across the country.
The company said the Chandler Street taproom closed immediately on October 22. The three beer brands had brought their production together at 166 Chandler Street in Buffaloโs Black Rock neighborhood, but the combined operation lasted only nine months.

Years of losses led to the closure
In an update posted on its website, Chandler Street Breweries said the business had operated at significant financial losses for several years. Ownership continued investing while the team tried to find a sustainable path, including acquiring Thin Man Brewery, consolidating production, cutting overhead and rebuilding distribution.
Those efforts were not enough to make the operation financially sustainable. The company pointed to a contracting craft beer market, higher operating costs, changes in consumer habits and discretionary spending, and difficulties in its distribution network.
The closure affects more than a taproom. Community Beer Works began brewing on Buffaloโs West Side in 2012 and grew into one of the cityโs better-known craft beer names. Thin Man Brewery followed in 2016 and built a reputation that reached beyond Western New York. Smoldered Society later joined the portfolio with its own distinct identity.
A shared home could not reverse the decline
Community Beer Works acquired Thin Man in 2024, bringing the brands and their brewing assets together. Chandler Street Breweries opened as their shared home in early 2026, an ambitious attempt to lower costs while keeping each label alive.
The company emphasized that the consolidation did not cause its financial problems. Instead, the new space was its biggest attempt to overcome challenges that had already been building for years.
The timing is especially bittersweet for the brewing team. Pumpkin Spice Whale, a Community Beer Works beer, earned a gold medal at the 2026 Great American Beer Festival even as the business faced some of its most difficult financial circumstances.
Chandler Street did not disclose how many current employees are affected, and it has not announced what will happen to the three brand names, recipes or equipment. Its statement thanked employees, customers, distributors, retailers and the Buffalo community for supporting the breweries over the years.
For local beer fans, the shutdown closes the latest chapter in a scene that helped turn neighborhood taprooms into community gathering places. It also shows how awards, loyal customers and recognizable brands may still struggle against rising costs and a changing market.
