Intro

“Pizza pizza!”
If you watched TV at all in the ’90s, you’ve heard Little Caesars’ iconic catchphrase, usually at the end of a commercial advertising comically decadent pizzas at comically low prices.
(Remember when they introduced the bacon-wrapped pizza? I sure do.)
Yes, Little Caesars has long been a staple of pizza in America.
But times change.

Competition is heating up

And we’re no longer limited to the big four (Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Little Caesars, Papa John’s) or grocery store pizza when we’re deciding what pizza to get.
There are a ton of new entrants. (And some of the old competitors have stepped up their game too.)
In fact, let’s face facts:

Lots of great pizza

There are now a lot of great pizzas out there, including many whose fans would claim they’re better than Little Caesars.
Agree or disagree?
Well, let’s hop right in with one of my personal favorites…

&Pizza

&Pizza is not a well-known brand (at least, not yet), as it’s only in four Mid-Atlantic states, plus DC.
But their pizza is absolutely fantastic. The pies are oblongs covered in innovative toppings and sauces.
Just as one example, their CBR pizza is a white pizza with chicken, bacon, ranch, grilled onions, mozzarella, and a parmesan-romano sauce. Yum.
(And, genuinely, most of their pizzas are topped with all kinds of fun stuff, not just your traditional pepperoni.)

Domino’s

I know I’ll get some flack for this, but I think Domino’s has really stepped up their game in the last few years, and they’re now clearly the best of the big four.
The garlic crust is so good, the toppings are on point, and their wings are my favorite among the big chains.
Definitely worth a try if you haven’t been lately – and with more than 14,000 locations, there’s just about guaranteed to be one nearby!

Papa John’s

Ok, I know I said Domino’s is the best of the big four – and I believe that – but Papa John’s is a close second for me.
There’s something about their unique cheese topping that’s always really hit the spot for me.
It’s just a little more “solid” than the others, and it’s got a nice cheesy finish as well.
Plus, those peppers and the garlic butter…if you know, you know.

Godfather’s Pizza

Godfather’s Pizza is good, straightforward pizza.
And lots of it. Their jumbo size pie is 12 slices!
My recommendation? Get the all-meat combo or the bacon cheeseburger – thin crust. (You can also get their golden crust stuffed with mozzarella cheese in medium and large sizes.)

Mellow Mushroom

The name is accurate and also kind of a misnomer.
It’s accurate because – these guys have a lot of great pizzas with mushroom toppings.
And also, they don’t JUST have pizzas with mushroom toppings! There are lots of other great, whacky, off-the-wall flavors too.
If you’re up for something new and not just the same tired old toppings, Mellow Mushroom (founded in Atlanta but now in several states) is a great place to go.

Vocelli

Vocelli is only in seven states (Midwest and Eastern seaboard), but it is beloved where it’s open.
The pizzas are good, the toppings are tasty, the price is excellent. No frills, no nonsense.
(I just had their stuffed crust pizza for the first time last night – and it was fantastic. So if you’re up for cheese in your crust, give it a go.)

And of course…Little Caesars

I couldn’t in good conscience leave this article without giving Little Caesars its due.
After all, they’re so well-known for a reason!
I love their innovative combos and flavors (a personal favorite is the Slices-n-stix with pepperoni on one half and bacon-topped cheese bread stix on the other).
And their thin crust is pretty good too!

Summary

So there you have it – six pizzas whose fans would argue they’re certainly better than Little Caesars.
But are they right?
Or is Little Caesars still on top?
