Intro (continued…)

The steakhouse scene is getting more competitive all the time!
There are a ton of great chains out there.
Including several whose fans would claim they’ve absolutely beaten out LongHorn.
Are they right?
Well, that’s for you to decide, starting with an old favorite:
Shutterstock
#1: Outback Steakhouse

Where you’ll find them: 49 states – sorry North Dakota!
All about the steaks: The Melbourne Porterhouse is genuinely one of my favorite steaks. You get that beautiful combination of NY strip and tenderloin meats, and at 22 ounces it’s a huge package! Oh, and get the Bloomin’ Onion if you want to try something very, very different and delicious.

#2: Texas Roadhouse

Where you’ll find them: All 50 states, with over 650 locations – Texas Roadhouse has been rapidly growing for years.
All about the steaks: I’m a fan of their Dallas filet, get it medium-rare if you want a great steak. And try all their starters – every one of them is good, and their cactus blossom is a pretty good stand-in for Outback’s Bloomin’ Onion.

#3: Morton’s

Where you’ll find them: Morton’s is in 22 states plus DC – there’s no real geographic concentration, it’s pretty much near big cities around the country.
All about the steaks: Morton’s is incredibly expensive – but take one bite of any of their steaks, and you’ll know why they’re worth every penny. Get the whipped horseradish cream with whatever you order.

#4: Fogo de Chao

Where you’ll find them: Fogo is in over 20 states, again centered on big metros.
All about the steaks: With Fogo it’s a little less about the quality – although that’s definitely still there! – but even more about the quantity. One cover charge gets you unlimited cuts of meat brought by staff on skewers, then sliced directly on to your plate.

#5: Texas de Brazil

Where you’ll find them: 23 states, similar to Fogo de Chao.
All about the steaks: You’ll have a very similar experience to Fogo – they run off the same business model! My two cents – make sure you get a few bites of their picanha steak.

#6: Michael Jordan’s Steak House

Where you’ll find them: Just three states (Illinois, Connecticut, and Washington State), plus one location in South Korea. And yes, it was founded by Michael Jordan. THAT Michael Jordan.
All about the steaks: Probably the most expensive steak dinner you’ll ever have – but they offer steak flights that are genuinely incredible. (And again – pricey.)
Get the Filet Oscar if you want an incredible meal.

#7: Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse

Where you’ll find them: 37 states and DC too – lots of Ruth’s Chris to go around!
All about the steaks: Their classic filet is fantastic, and their grilled asparagus is the perfect side. But don’t be afraid to get their julienne fries – they’re delicious as well.

#8: Logan’s Roadhouse

Where you’ll find them: Logan’s is in 22 states, mostly on the East Coast but with plenty of stores on the West Coast and even a few in the Midwest!
All about the steaks: Logan’s pushes their ribeye (12 oz or 16 oz), and with good reason. It’s well-marbled and has a full, beefy flavor. Get the onion rings and their amped-up shrimp for appetizers, and you’ve got a great meal!

#9: The Capital Grille

Where you’ll find them: There are less than 100 Capital Grilles in the USA, mostly centered around big cities. (Chicago, NYC, Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth, etc.).
All about the steaks: I recommend their dry aged NY strip, and I get it any time I visit. At 14 oz, it’s not the biggest steak you’ll ever have, but it’s been dry aged for 18-24 days, which imparts a beautiful nutty flavor throughout the extra-tender beef. ADd in the lobster and crab cake, or the prosciutto-wrapped mozarella with tomatoes (two great appetizers), and you’ll be in heaven.

#10: Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse

Where you’ll find them: There are about 65 Fleming’s in the country, mostly around major metro areas and across 25 states.
All about the steaks: The steak’s great, you can’t go wrong (that’s the benefit of the high price point – you know everything is good). But my favorite item on their menu, bar none, is their burrata with prosciutto. If you’ve never had burrata…you’re in for a real treat.

And of course – LongHorn

Where you’ll find them: There are about 600 LongHorn Steakhouses in the USA, covering 43 states. Just about the only place you won’t find them: The West Coast!
All about the steaks: I’m a big fan of their porterhouse, but their renegade sirloin (which is less than half the price) will do in a pinch. As for sides – get the mac & cheese or the brussels sprouts.

Summary

So there you have it – ten steaks whose fans would argue they’re better than LongHorn.
And of course – each has a good argument to make!
But the real question remains…
