Intro

If you’re anything like me, Reese’s peanut butter cups hold a special place in your heart…
They were the best candy to get when trick-or-treating (aside from full-size Snickers or Milky Ways, of course)…
And unlike most candy bars, the peanut butter helped fill you up, so they sort of even counted as a snack!
(I mean, that’s how I justified them to myself, anyway.)
But of course…

Times change

It’s 2025, and loads of competitors have stepped up their game…delivering delicious alternatives by the dozens.
And some of them, frankly, are even better than Reese’s at this point…at least, according to their many fans.
Are they right or wrong?
Well, I’ll let you decide.
Starting with a personal favorite…

Justin’s organic peanut butter cups

If I have one complaint with Reese’s peanut butter cups, it’s that they’re just a little bit too sweet.
Part of that is the milk chocolate, part of it is all the sugar in the peanut butter.
Justin’s does a good job of solving for both – it’s dark chocolate and just generally a little less sweet. Plus it’s organic!

Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups

I mean, if it’s TJ’s, it has to be good, right?
At least, that’s my philosophy…
And this is another great example of why.
Their peanut butter cups have that perfect ratio of chocolate to peanut butter.
(Plus, they’re the thicker peanut butter cups, which I just like for aesthetics.)

Boyer’s peanut butter cups

You probably know Boyer’s from its delicious mallo cups – that’s the picture I included to jog your memory – but their peanut butter cups are, honestly, just as good.
Plus, it’s all American-made.

Unreal peanut butter cups

Unreal has a great lineup of chocolate in general, and their peanut butter cups are no exception.
Again, pretty much a perfect ratio of chocolate to peanut butter, and somehow they preserved the taste with less sugar!
Plus, it’s non-GMO and fair trade chocolate, which is obviously another plus.

See’s Candies peanut butter patties

I guess you could argue whether this counts as a chocolate cup…but I’m writing the article, so I’m gonna say it does.
After all, See’s peanut butter patties are roughly the same size as a chocolate peanut butter cup…
And they have chocolate and peanut butter in them. And kind of a similar shape.
Close enough – and for taste purposes, even better!

Lily’s peanut butter cups

I love Lily’s for the taste; you’ll probably love them because they’re a great healthier alternative to Reese’s.
They have no added sugar and usually use stevia instead – so they’re friendly to dieting in general and the Keto diet in particular.
Fewer calories and healthier without sacrificing taste? Yes please.

Palmer’s peanut butter cups

I would say Palmer’s more or less matches Reese’s on taste but definitely wins on price.
It has a similar flavor profile – maybe a touch too sweet for me – and it’s not always available, but if you’re looking to get your chocolate + peanut butter fix on a budget, they’re the clear winner in my book.

But let’s not forget Reese’s

I couldn’t leave without giving Reese’s their due.
After all, there’s a reason everyone uses it as the standard against which they compare themselves!
Reese’s peanut butter cups are awesome – maybe not quite as awesome as these alternatives? – and remain absolutely beloved across America.

Summary

So there you have it – seven alternatives to Reese’s peanut butter cups whose fans would argue they’re totally better.
Or at least, each of them has a good argument to make!
But of course, this brings us to three all-important questions…
Shutterstock
Is Reese’s still #1?

The first, of course, is: Is Reese’s still the best? Or have they been dethroned?
#2: Which of these have you tried? What did you think?
#3: Any great peanut butter cups I missed?
