Intro

Subway rivals McDonald’s and Starbucks for the title of “Most Widespread Chain in the World.”
But just because Subway’s everywhere doesn’t mean its footlong subs are the best sandwiches out there.
Here are nine sandwich chains that have serious fans and serious claims of making a much better sandwich…

Jimmy John’s

Where to find them: Mostly in the U.S. with over 2,700 locations across 43 states.
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: The bread! Both the 8-inch French bread and the sliced wheat bread are absolutely delicious. I personally go back and forth between the two with my usual Turkey Tom, double meat.

Firehouse Subs

Where to find them: Over 1,200 restaurants across 46 states plus some international locations.
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: The toasted subs are a winner! Bonus points that the founders were actually firefighters. Some would make the case for Potbelly or Quizno’s, but there’s only room for one toasted sub specialist on this list!

Wawa

Where to find them: Over 1,000 locations mostly in the Mid-Atlantic U.S.
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: Yes, it’s a convenience store/gas station. But we don’t discriminate on anything but taste here! Ask anyone from Philly whether they love their Eagles or their Wawa hoagies more … they’ll at least pause for a second.

Capriotti’s

Where to find them: A smaller chain, but still 112 stores in 27 states.
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: Do you love Thanksgiving all year ’round? Let me point you to their signature sandwich, the Bobbie. It’s got slow-roasted turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mayo. It was voted “The Greatest Sandwich in America,” albeit by aol.com. Try it for yourself!

Mendocino Farms

Where to find them: Over 50 locations, mostly in California but also Texas (Houston, DFW), and Washington (Seattle).
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: If you’re a Whole Foods kind of person, this may be the chain for you! Its ingredients boast “no added hormones, artificial sweeteners, food dyes, or artificial flavors” and its creative, “healthier” menu includes things like its “Not So Fried” Chicken.
Note: Its friends call it Mendo’s.

Publix

Where to find them: Over 1,300 stores, the majority in Florida but also fanning out through the Southeast.
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: Yup, Wawa made our list and now we have Publix. Food snobs can go back to Mendo’s! Fans love their Pub subs because you can customize them (e.g. including upgrading to Boar’s Head meat), get them toasted, etc. Great taste at supermarket prices!

Jersey Mike’s

Where to find them: Over 2,800 US locations plus some elsewhere.
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: Their cold-cut sandwiches what their known for, especially if you get them Mike’s way (onions, lettuce, tomatoes, vinegar, oil, and spices). Strong all around with good bread and good meats and cheeses.
This is my personal favorite of the sandwich chains (my usual is the Club Supreme, which features roast beef and turkey).

Earl of Sandwich

Where to find them: 30 locations in the US across 11 states (California, Idaho, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, Nevada, Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, South Dakota, and Maryland).
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: Their Original 1762 sandwich (roast beef, cheddar cheese, and horseradish sauce) is everything a roast beef sandwich should be. Also try their caprese or Italian sandwiches if you want something a little more zesty!

Panera

Where to find them: Panera has over 2,200 locations nationwide in 48 states. (Sorry Hawaii and Alaska.)
Why their sandwiches are better than Subway: Honestly, the excellent Panera bread on its own makes for a better sandwich. But in addition, their focus on “clean” ingredients and delicious flavor combinations really takes them to another level. Their Frontega chicken sandwich is an old favorite.

Summary

So there you have it – nine sandwiches whose fans would absolutely claim they’re better than Subway.
(And let’s face it – they all have a potentially valid claim.)
But here’s the big question:

Two questions, actually

#1: Are they right? Are any of these better than Subway? And…
#2: What’s YOUR favorite sandwich shop?
