Intro

If you love Tony’s Chocolonely, you probably dig its mission as well as its taste.
After all, it was started by a journalist who was horrified by chocolate that depends on slave labor.
But no matter how much you love Tony’s, you probably enjoy at least some variety in your chocolates.
Here are seven more mission-driven chocolates that have fans that swear “THIS chocolate is the best…”

Divine Chocolate

The pitch: This Fair Trade chocolate is largely owned by a cocoa farmers’ coop out of Ghana. It’s won awards from places as diverse as Good Housekeeping and the Guild of Fine Food. Yummy!

Alter Eco

The pitch: Alter Eco has all the stuff…organic, Fair Trade, B Corporation, post-consumer recyclable packaging, climate-neutral certification, etc. And it has chocolate bars if you’re looking for vegan, Paleo, gluten-free, or even keto (like the Total Blackout bar that’s 100% cacao).

Aldi

The pitch: Aldi was actually the first large chain partner in Tony’s Open Chain (Tony Chocolonely’s effort to mobilize other companies to help eradicate slavery in the chocolate industry). Its Choceur CHOCO Changer is a legit contender here, whether you prefer the 70% Dark Chocolate, the Pistachio Raspberry, or the Caramel Sea Salt.

Feastables

The pitch: Yup, Mr. Beast’s Feastables is a Tony’s Open Chain partner. Yeah, Jimmy Donaldson is selling these on the strength of his YouTube platform. But the co-founder of Feastables has street cred from Rxbar.
Still not convinced? Okay, let’s move on!

Trader Joe’s

The pitch: The store that brings us world-class wine at budget prices also has a great Fair Trade chocolate: Trader Joe’s Fair Trade Organic 72% Cacao Belgian Chocolate Bar. Yes, please!

Theo

The pitch: Theo’s has its own annual impact report around areas like ethical sourcing and plant-based packaging. On the taste side, it’s got amazing flavors like Big Daddy (think a S’mores with caramel!).

Green & Black’s

The pitch: This British organic chocolate has been doing Fairtrade-y things since the 90’s. These days it’s owned by the huge Mondelez (which makes many non-Fairtrade goods) but is still certified by the Fairtrade Foundation.

Tony’s Chocolonely

The pitch: We couldn’t leave without giving some love to this wonderful Dutch treat. I remember being the adult version of a kid in a candy store when I visited the Tony’s Chocolonely store in Amsterdam. Surrounded by so much delicious chocolate (like the Milk Honey Almond Nougat…the one in the eye-catching yellow wrapper!).
Is Tony’s the tastiest Fair Trade chocolate? Or is it one of the other ones we’ve highlighted? Let us know in the comments section. I’ll be the one with a chocolate stain on my lips!
