Intro

Cracker Barrel has fallen on hard times recently – guest traffic has been declining, and earlier this year the CEO said that “we’re just not as relevant as we once were.”
Their solution to the problem? A weird menu refresh and lots of work on streamlining their operations.
Which unfortunately is code for closing restaurants.
Here are four which disappeared this year:

#1: Medford, Oregon

This loss is a heartbreaker, not just for the Medford community, but also for what it means for Oregon more broadly.
Because, you see – this was the very last Cracker Barrel in the state.
What a shame.

#2: Sacramento, California

That’s right, California’s state capitol no longer has its own Cracker Barrel – after the location at 1000 Howe Avenue closed earlier this year.
Now residents of Sacramento have to drive all the way to Rocklin to find their classic country-fried steak.

#3: Santa Maria, California

To add insult to injury, Cracker Barrel closed a second California location this year, in Santa Maria.
Now residents have to drive a whopping 84 miles to get to their nearest Cracker Barrel.
Even worse – with the loss of its Sacramento and Santa Maria locations, Cracker Barrel now only operates five restaurants in the largest state in the US.
Not great.

#4: Columbia, South Carolina

Columbia’s closure is probably the least heart-breaking of the bunch – because South Carolina still has 23 Cracker Barrels, including three more in the Columbia metro.
Still, it’d be great to see numbers trending in the other direction!

It’s not ALL bad news

Cracker Barrel is in fact opening one new location – in Colorado (bringing the state total to five).
By the end of 2025, residents in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood will get to enjoy good old-fashioned country cooking right in their own backyard.
That leaves the chain with just under 650 stores nationwide as of now.

How can Cracker Barrel change the game?

Cracker Barrel has had a rough go of it as other chains have improved their breakfasts and gained traction in the endless breakfast fights.

We quit going to Cracker Barrel because of the poor service. In observation of the staff, they are overworked and pushed to the limit because of staffing levels. No one wants to spend money at a place that doesn’t value their employees. If you need more staff, try upping the hourly wage and hiring people worth saving your business.
