
Meal-kit giant HelloFresh expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic as millions of households turned to home-delivered meal kits. But as demand cooled in the years that followed, the company began restructuring its operations — leading to several large layoffs and distribution center closures across multiple regions.
Major layoffs in Georgia
One of the largest workforce reductions came in 2024, when HelloFresh announced it would close its distribution center in Newnan, Georgia.
The closure resulted in 727 layoffs, making it one of the biggest single job cuts tied to the meal-kit industry in recent years. The facility had originally opened in 2020 during the pandemic, when demand for home-delivered food surged. However, the company later said the market had “stabilized,” prompting a reevaluation of its operational footprint.
HelloFresh said the decision was part of a broader strategy to optimize its distribution network and improve efficiency as consumer habits shifted back toward traditional grocery shopping and dining out.
Texas distribution center closure
More recently, HelloFresh announced another large round of layoffs tied to a facility shutdown in Grand Prairie, Texas.
In 2025, the company revealed it would lay off 273 workers as it closed the distribution center and consolidated operations into a nearby facility in Irving, Texas.
Earlier layoffs in California
Another major workforce reduction occurred in 2022, when HelloFresh closed a production facility in Richmond, California. The shutdown resulted in 611 layoffs affecting warehouse staff, production workers and management roles.
The company opted not to renew the lease on the Bay Area facility and shifted production to other locations within its national network.
Broader restructuring efforts
The layoffs reflect a wider shift across the meal-kit industry after the pandemic boom faded. Companies like HelloFresh expanded aggressively between 2020 and 2022 to meet soaring demand, opening new warehouses and hiring thousands of workers.
But as customer growth slowed, many companies began scaling back operations and focusing on profitability rather than rapid expansion.
HelloFresh remains one of the largest meal-kit companies in the world and continues to operate globally. Still, the series of layoffs and facility consolidations highlight how the company — and the broader meal-kit sector — is adjusting to a new post-pandemic market reality.
